Five-Point Programmatic Thrust
The Columbia (MO) Alumnae Chapter, as a chapter of Delta, has dedicated itself to public service since 1973. All of our programs seek to carry out the vision of our founders through the following areas of focus:
International Awareness and Involvement
Physical and Mental Health
Political Awareness and Involvement
Muriel Battle Scholarship Gala
The Gala is named for the late Dr. Battle, who was a member of the sorority for over 50 years. She was an outstanding educator and community servant. This fundraiser is held each year so that the chapter may award scholarships to deserving young ladies in our community. We have been awarding scholarships in our community for over twenty years.
This formal event is typically held in December and includes: silent auction, dinner, live auction, and live band.
“Mental Health with Emphasis on Confidence and Gratitude” was the focus of the March 26, 2022 Columbia (MO) Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated; Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy session.
The young ladies who are participating in our Delta Academy, were able to discuss gratitude and positive affirmations, as well as doing activities related to these topics (via Zoom). A big thank you to our presenter, our very own, Soror Te’a Zeigler.
We also had a special guest speaker, Sharon G. Flake, Author of the book “The Skin I’m In.”
Ms. Flake discussed her journey in life and becoming a published author. Ms. Flake discussed with our young ladies her book “The Skin I’m In”. She interacted with them about the characters and themes of the book (self-esteem, body image, bullying and the true meaning of friendship. Our young ladies were encouraged by Ms. Flake to continue dreaming, believing and not give up.
Sharon G. Flake has received awards and recognition including: Coretta Scott King Honor Award; Kirkus Review Top Ten Book of the Year and numerous other accolades.
